CHAPTER ELEVEN: WHERE I’VE BEEN

“I’m sorry I’ve been away for so long…I’ve been dealing with things…and that took time and I’m sorry I didn’t return your calls or your messages…I’m sorry I fell off the map. I don’t want to rehash what happened because we all know what happened, I don’t need therapy, I don’t need to talk about it. I just want to let it go. It’s gone. I just want to go back to the way things were…well before that bad shit happened that we’re not gonna talk about anymore,” Teddy says, sitting on the sofa across from the rest of the assembled housemates. They sit quietly, each studying Teddy differently. They look off the unshaven Teddy, the first look they’ve had at their friend in three months. They then turn to each other, exchanging nods and messages with eyebrows and neck scratches, except for Tony, who stays trained on Teddy.

“What the fuck are we talking about?” Tony asks, looking around at his friends.

“The thing that happened last May, with Teddy and Clint…and the room…and the girl…and the,” Steven tries to explain.

“Yea, the fight and the blood and the screaming and the chaos,” Bruce continues.

“I don’t know what we’re talking about,” Tony says.

“When Clint ate out my girlfriend and probably fucked her and that whole thing,” Teddy blurts out.

The guys eyes start to wander.

“Oh that thing? Shit, I already forgot about that,” Tony replies, reaching for the remote, “You think Planet Earth is on? That shit is fucking mind blowing.”

The room exhales.

“James get off the fucking couch, I wanna lay down,” Tony demands, pushing James off the end of the couch.

“I hate to interrupt, but can someone drive me home?” a voice says from behind them, it’s the birthday girl James slept with that, the one Bruce still hasn’t driven home yet.

“Yea let’s go,” Bruce says, jumping off the couch and walking the birthday girl out the door. James waves goodbye to his ketchup enthused woman.

“YES, THE FUCKING OCEAN ONE,” Tony screams, leaping up into the air in concert with the large whale now filling the screen. He pauses, hanging in mid air by the tips of his toes and then collapses on top of Steven, causing a bowl of cereal sitting on the living room table to fly skyward from a wayward kick.

The cereal covers the floor, disappearing under the couches.

“Get the fuck off of me,” Stevens demands, pushing Tony to the ground.

Tony leaps to his feet and runs towards his bedroom.

“I can’t be sober for this!” he screams.

The ride back to campus is quiet. Bruce turns down a side street towards bar row, his younger car mate, looks out the passenger side window, pointing at all of the places her older friend told her she “just absolutely had to go.”

She seemed so happy. This was all new to her. The panic hadn’t set in yet. The most important thing in this girl’s world was what she was going to wear tonight. Bruce was so jealous. This girl was in the prime of her life and she didn’t even know it yet.

“How old are you?” she asks, breaking her train of thought/story time.

“I just turned 21,” Bruce replies, almost asking himself if that was right.

“21…that’s old as fuck,” the girl lets out, a searing blow that wounds Bruce.

“Jesus…how old are you…I don’t even know your name,” Bruce responds, studying this disheveled party girl in James sweatshirt and shorts.

“I just turned 18 and my name is Samantha,” she replies, looking at Bruce, and away from the window for the first time.

CHAPTER TWELVE: LOOK AT ALL MY SHIT

The bell on my cell phone chimed. My bare bed felt cold, the mattress springs digging into my back. I need to get an egg crate or a mattress pad or something. I could smell the burning from my room, the smell of time fleeing into the atmosphere.

“Why is there a fire in the backyard?” Steven asked.

I rolled across the mattress to peer out my doorway, “Because I’m burning everything,” I replied.

Steven left my eye line and walked into the backyard, he approached the metal garbage can alit with the flame of the past with caution.

“You’re burning everything Teddy?” he asked.

I joined him in the backyard, seeing the results of the match I had lit minutes earlier.

“Just the stuff she bought me, or I bought her…or the stuff that reminded me of her,” I reeled off, checking boxes on the list that I had made in my mind.

“So pretty much everything,” Steven replied.

“Not the important stuff,” I returned in kind.

We stood over the burning pyre to my misbegotten May and admired the blaze. The fire swayed and swerved, its flames creeping up over the edges of its metal container, singeing the atmosphere, shooing flies away from its unwashed contents.

“I would have taken that polo shirt…I think I wore it more then you did,” Steven offered, peeking into the can at the checkers on that shirt she bought me in November.

“I could have given it to you, but then you’d be in the can with it,” I said, kicking a rock across the yard.

“How are we going to put this thing out?” Steven wondered.

“Fires always burn themselves out…sooner or later,” I maintained, unsure if that was really true or if it was just something Francis Bacon once wrote.

This needed to be done. This purge. It was another necessary step on the road back.

“Get some marshmallows, we shouldn’t waste this fire. I only get to burn all my shit once,” I told Steven as I returned to the house.

My bare room looked good. It was clean for once. I grabbed my phone from the nightstand.

A single text message awaiting me.

“Come over,” it read.
